Intelligent Horsemanship

The Intelligent Horsemanship Association was created to bring together and support all those who believe in treating horses in a fair and intelligent manner.

"Owning and riding horses should be a pleasant, fulfilling activity, but all too often problems arise that turn the experience into a frustrating, traumatic trial for both horse and owner. A relationship that should be founded on trust, co-operation, and mutual respect is more often built on coercion, resentment and fear. Intelligent Horsemanship techniques are aimed at anyone who would like to improve their relationship with their horse. Holders of the Monty Roberts Preliminary Certificate Of Horsemanship, we can use techniques such as join-up ™ to solve behavioural problems, as well as take these methods into the ridden work, using the Mary Wanless Ride With Your Mind ™ approach." Nicole Golding, Intelligent Riding Clinics (www.whisperingback.co.uk)

Training in Intelligent Horsemanship

This year I decided to add to my horse education and broaden my knowledge by beginning as a student of Intelligent Horsemanship training under Kelly Marks and her team. Kelly Marks is one of the country's most popular and effective specialists in understanding horse psychology and behaviour and finding workable solutions for the benefit of both horses and their owners. Californian Horse Whisperer Monty Roberts says "Kelly Marks has an extraordinary gift".

Nicole Gooding / Adam Goodfeelow

Nicole was one of the first ever students on the Monty Roberts Preliminary Certificate of Horsemanship, and immediately went on to help Kelly Marks with the courses, initially just as a spare pair of hands, and then later as a teacher of the Intelligent Riding Courses.

Since completing their Monty Roberts Preliminary Certificate of Horsemanship and Mary Wanless Teacher Training Courses, Adam and Nicole have gone on to help literally hundreds of people and their horses, solving seemingly insurmountable problems. In 1998 they moved to Gloucestershire, where they set up a yard in the picturesque surroundings of Moor Wood stables. They were among the first of Kelly Marks’s students to become Intelligent Horsemanship Recommended Associates.

Monty Roberts

Known as, “The Man Who Listens to Horses,” Monty gained international fame by developing a method of communicating with horses using their natural body language and a technique he calls Join-Up®. Founded on a consistent set of principles, communication, and trust, Monty’s methods assert that violence is never the answer. Its Monty's goal in life is to "Leave the world a better place than I found it, for horses and for people too"
