Schooling Services

I am currently working with a number of horses in Hampshire & Surrey, offering various schooling services, dependent on each horseand riders individual needs. I currently have a limited number of spaces available each week. I can work your horse at your own premises, and I am more than happy, in fact I encourage you, to watch me working your horse. I will take time to explain what I am doing and why. Should you want to, I also like to work directly with you on your own horse developing your ability to replicate the work I am doing so as you can continue to develop together. The types of schooling services U undertake falls into several categories:

General Schooling

Sometimes you just want to be able to get a little bit more from your horse, but can't quite achieve the results you want. This is somewhere I can help. I can work with you and your horse to help you develop your horses basic schooling and lateral work, to help lighten them to the leg and hand and develop their rhythm and balance in all three basic paces.

I can also work with you to iron out any challenges you might be having jumping. 90% of jumping is the flatwork, ie getting to and and from each fence, so by improving that you will improve your jumping. We can also work on specific jump schooling exercises to help improve your jumping partnership.

Re-schooling

In some cases you might have encountered problems with your horse or inherited problems from a horse's previous home. These can affecting your ability to work effectively with your horse. In these situations I can come and visit you and your horse to assess the situation. I will then advise you as to what I believe could be a sensible course of action. In re-schooling cases the initial consultation would be free, only incurring a petrol charge if my travelling distance to you is more than 12 miles.

Example re-schooling issue:
Any number of things can cause these re-schooling problems. For instance earlier this year one of my clients asked me to ride a horse of their's who was excellent to handle on the ground, great to ride out in company, had a fantastic jumping ability (when you could get him in the ring!) but absolutely refused to leave other horses or the yard. His reaction was to rear and spin round and attempt to gallop off towards home or the lorry! He was not a naughty horse he was a horse who lacked confidence when there werent people on the ground with him or other horses around him. He hadnt developed his own sense of independence. I will shortly be writing a case study to explain how I worked with him which you will be able to view in the case study section. But in short it was a combination of changing how he was handled from the ground to encourage him to become comfortable in his own space and less "humanised". Taking his learning one small step at the time so he didnt react too much to pressure and therefore react in panic. This horse is now 6 months down the line working wonderfully on his own and competing and winning at shows.

Starting / initial schooling

Often people end up with horses that lack balance, co-ordination & flexibility. The early schooling after a horse has been started under saddle can make all the difference in preventing this happening. A horse is an athlete and needs to be worked in a way that encourages the development of the correct muscle groups and gives them balance and co-ordination. They need to be encouraged to work in an "elastic" way that will form the foundation of all the work they do in their career. Understanding how to react to your leg and carry themselves, remaining light in contact are also exceptionally important. These are all foundation skills that a horse will benefit from learning from the beginning of its ridden career. I can begin this work for you and help you develop a program for your horse that keeps work interesting and fun for them, and at the same time as developing their fitness and muscle structure. It is easier to develop muscles correctly from the beginning than it is to undo the overdevelopment of the wrong muscles and the consequential under development of the correct muscles.

Charges

DIfferent horses need different amounts of work for different lengths of time, especially in the beginning. In the initial stages when I may only be working your horse for half an hour at a time my charges are £15 per session. Once your horse progresses to needing 40+ minutes then the charge will be £20 per session. Petrol is charges at £0.25 per mile for journeys over 12 miles. If you wish me to work your horse when you are not there, requiring me to tack up etc, then I can happily do this for an additional £5 per session.

I also have a limited number of spaces to take horses / ponies for short periods of time for reschooling, starting etc. (As of 1st Nov 07 I have only 1 space now available)
